Dangerous Heat Wave Expected Across Eastern New York Through Fourth of July Weekend
HUDSON VALLEY, New York — Residents across eastern New York, including the Hudson Valley and Capital Region, are being urged to prepare for a dangerous stretch of heat beginning Wednesday and continuing through the Fourth of July weekend.
Forecasters expect temperatures to climb into the upper 90s from Wednesday through Friday, with heat index values potentially exceeding 100 degrees because of high humidity. The hottest conditions are expected Thursday and Friday.
In addition to the extreme heat, scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms are possible throughout the week. Some storms could produce heavy rainfall, gusty winds, dangerous lightning, and localized flooding.
Wednesday is expected to bring near-record heat with highs in the upper 90s, along with the chance for afternoon thunderstorms.
Thursday is forecast to be the hottest day of the week, with temperatures approaching 100 degrees and dangerous conditions for anyone spending extended periods outdoors.
Extreme heat is expected to continue Friday, with another round of afternoon thunderstorms possible.
Conditions are expected to ease slightly over the Fourth of July weekend, but temperatures will remain hot, reaching the low 90s Saturday with continued chances for scattered afternoon storms.
Officials encourage residents to stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, check on elderly neighbors and vulnerable individuals, wear lightweight clothing, and never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles.
Residents are also encouraged to monitor local forecasts in case heat advisories or excessive heat warnings are issued later this week.
