Dashcam Video Released in Interstate 85 Shootout That Injured South Carolina Deputy
ANDERSON COUNTY, South Carolina — Dashcam video released by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) shows the moments leading up to an exchange of gunfire that left an Anderson County deputy injured and a suspect dead earlier this year.
The footage, released as part of a Freedom of Information Act request, captures the April 20 incident along Interstate 85 northbound near Exit 11 at Highway 24 and Highway 243 near Townville.
According to investigators, 32-year-old Austin Robertson of Pennsylvania was initially seated in the back of a deputy’s patrol vehicle before attempting to escape. The video shows deputies struggling with Robertson after he exited the patrol vehicle.
Authorities said deputies deployed their Tasers during the confrontation. Robertson then made his way back to his vehicle before an exchange of gunfire occurred.
Robertson was pronounced dead at the scene.
Anderson County Deputy Alex Albrech was injured during the shooting and was airlifted to Greenville Memorial Hospital. He underwent multiple surgeries and was released from the hospital approximately one week later.
SLED released the dashcam footage Monday as part of a public records request.
