How to Apply for Newburgh’s Hometown Heroes Military Banner Program
NEWBURGH, N.Y. — After the City of Newburgh officially approved the Hometown Heroes Military Banner Program, applications are now available for veterans and their families to participate in the initiative honoring local military service members.
The program recognizes current service members, honorably discharged veterans, retired military personnel, and deceased veterans through commemorative banners displayed on City-owned streetlight poles throughout Newburgh.
To be eligible, the honoree must have served in the United States Armed Forces and either be a current City of Newburgh resident or have an immediate family member who currently resides in the city. Applicants must also provide proof of military service, such as a Military ID or DD Form 214, along with a photograph of the service member in uniform.
Applications are accepted during two annual enrollment periods:
December 1 – March 31 (Spring/Summer installation) June 1 – September 30 (Fall/Winter installation)
The fee for a new banner is $375, which covers production of the banner after the application has been reviewed and approved. Banners will remain on display for up to two years before being returned to the applicant or the veteran’s family.
Councilman Robert McLymore, who introduced the Hometown Heroes Program, recently thanked supporters following the City’s approval of the initiative, saying the passage marked “the first step” and that efforts will continue to improve the program moving forward.
