WINDSOR, North Carolina — A major law enforcement response unfolded Monday after inmates at the Bertie-Martin Regional Jail overpowered correctional officers, temporarily seized control of the facility, and took two officers hostage before authorities regained control.

According to officials, the incident began around 5 a.m. when inmates assaulted three correctional officers inside the jail. One officer was able to escape and alert authorities, while two others were taken hostage as inmates gained control of parts of the detention center.

State, local, and federal law enforcement agencies quickly responded, establishing a secure perimeter around the jail while tactical teams and negotiators worked to resolve the situation.

After several hours, officials confirmed the two hostages were safely released. Authorities also confirmed that several inmates who had been secured during the incident were safely removed as law enforcement worked to restore order.

Bertie County Sheriff Tyrone Ruffin said there was no immediate threat to the public but urged residents to avoid the area while officers completed their operation.

“Our top priority is the safety of our staff, inmates, and the surrounding community,” Ruffin said.

Authorities later confirmed they had regained full control of the Bertie-Martin Regional Jail.

Officials have not confirmed reports circulating on social media that inmates were armed with weapons, and no information has been released regarding what may have been used during the takeover.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation into how the inmates overpowered correctional staff and what led to the incident.

No fatalities have been reported.
