Supreme Court Allows Trump Administration to End Protected Status for Hundreds of Thousands of Haitian and Syrian Migrants

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that the Trump administration may move forward with ending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for hundreds of thousands of Haitian and Syrian immigrants, reversing lower court decisions that had blocked the policy.

In a 6-3 decision, the court allowed the administration to terminate TPS protections for approximately 350,000 Haitian nationals and about 6,100 Syrian nationals living in the United States.

Temporary Protected Status allows individuals from countries experiencing armed conflict, natural disasters, or other extraordinary conditions to legally live and work in the United States for limited periods while preventing their deportation. The designation is typically granted in 18-month increments and may be renewed.

The United States first designated Haiti for TPS following the devastating 2010 earthquake, while Syria received the designation after civil war erupted in 2012.

The Supreme Court’s ruling could have broader implications for TPS recipients from other countries whose protected status may also face review.

In a separate immigration decision issued the same day, the Supreme Court ruled that migrants arriving at the U.S. border are not entitled to apply for asylum until they have physically entered U.S. territory, another legal victory for the Trump administration’s immigration policies.
