Tennessee Death Row Inmate Christa Pike Awake After Failed Execution

NASHVILLE, TN — Tennessee death row inmate Christa Pike is conscious and speaking after surviving the state’s failed attempt to execute her by lethal injection last week, according to her attorneys.

Pike, 50, remains hospitalized and is receiving critical medical care. Her legal team said she is still handcuffed and shackled to her hospital bed and warned that her prognosis remains unclear, with a lengthy recovery expected.

An anesthesiologist advising Pike’s attorneys said she has been removed from a ventilator and can communicate in a basic way. She reportedly remembers being hospitalized but does not appear to remember the execution attempt.

Tennessee attempted to execute Pike at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville on September 30. She received two doses of pentobarbital but remained alive and was transported to a hospital after the execution was stopped.

Medical experts have suggested that the drug may have entered tissue surrounding Pike’s veins instead of reaching her bloodstream in a quantity sufficient to cause death. State officials have not provided a final explanation for what went wrong.

Experts have described the case as potentially unprecedented because Pike reportedly survived after execution drugs were administered. Previous failed lethal-injection attempts generally ended before the drugs entered the prisoner’s body.

Pike was sentenced to death for the 1995 torture and killing of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. Pike was 18 at the time. Her co-defendant and then-boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp, was 17 and received a life sentence.

Following the failed execution, Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee suspended the state’s remaining executions for 2026 and ordered a third-party review. Tennessee Department of Correction Commissioner Frank Strada is also resigning.

Pike’s attorneys are asking Lee to commute her sentence to life in prison without parole. They are also seeking the preservation of evidence connected to the execution attempt while the investigation continues.
