NOLAN WELLS INVESTIGATION: WHERE THE CASE STANDS ONE MONTH LATER

MISSISSIPPI —More than one month after 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells was found dead on Horn Island following a Fourth of July boating trip, investigators have yet to determine how he died.

What began as the unexplained death of an Ocean Springs teenager has grown into a nationally followed case involving multiple federal arrests, independent investigations, celebrity support, planned lawsuits, and widespread social media speculation. Despite those developments, no one has been charged in connection with Wells’ death.

Authorities recovered Wells’ body on July 6 after he disappeared during a boating trip to Horn Island with friends. While investigators initially said they had found no evidence of foul play, Wells’ family has continued to question the circumstances surrounding his death, pointing to conflicting accounts from those who were with him.

The Mississippi State Medical Examiner completed an official autopsy, but the findings have not been released publicly. According to officials, the case and autopsy results will be presented to a grand jury once investigators complete their work.

The Wells family, represented by civil rights attorney Ben Crump, also commissioned an independent autopsy funded by former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick. That examination, conducted by Dr. Roger Mitchell Jr., listed both the cause and manner of death as “undetermined pending investigation.” The report did not confirm drowning or homicide, stating additional investigation is needed before any conclusions can be reached.

Crump’s legal team has continued its own investigation, seeking records from Snapchat, Life360, and other sources while issuing evidence preservation notices to individuals connected to Wells’ final hours.

The case has also expanded beyond the investigation into Wells’ death. Three people have been federally charged for allegedly making threats against witnesses, public officials, and others connected to the investigation. None of those individuals has been accused of involvement in Wells’ death.

Meanwhile, the three young men who were with Wells on Horn Island — Warren Hudson, Jax Pitalo, and Morgan Seymour — have denied any wrongdoing and retained attorneys Tyler Cox and Edward Paltzik. Their legal team has announced plans to file defamation lawsuits against individuals they say falsely accused the teens online.

The Hudson family has also released recordings they say contain death threats directed at family members and others connected to the investigation while continuing to offer a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in Wells’ death.

The investigation has drawn national attention from figures including Rev. Al Sharpton, filmmaker Tyler Perry, former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, and television legal analyst Nancy Grace, while the case continues to generate widespread public interest.

Despite weeks of public attention, two autopsies, multiple federal arrests unrelated to Wells’ death, and parallel investigations, the central question remains unanswered:
