TOWN OF NEWBURGH PLANS LEGAL ACTION AFTER ICE LEASES LOCAL WAREHOUSE

NEWBURGH, New York — The Town of Newburgh is preparing to pursue legal action after federal immigration officials leased a warehouse within the town that could become a new U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility.
According to town officials, ICE has leased a warehouse located at 800 Corporate Boulevard. In response, the Town of Newburgh says it intends to challenge the plan through legal action.
The proposal has also drawn criticism from elected officials, including U.S. Rep. Pat Ryan, who said he opposes the establishment of an ICE detention facility in Newburgh and is seeking additional information from the federal government about the proposal.
If developed, the site would become another immigration detention facility in New York. Other projects are already planned elsewhere in the state, including a new Department of Homeland Security detention facility in Batavia and a proposed ICE detention facility inside the Kenneth B. Keating Federal Building in Rochester.
At this time, no timeline has been announced for the proposed Newburgh facility, and the town’s legal challenge has not yet been resolved.
