17-Year-Old Dies Following Police-Involved Shooting in Wappingers Falls

WAPPINGERS FALLS, New York — A 17-year-old boy died early Saturday after law enforcement officers discharged their weapons during what officials described as a “critical incident” in the Village of Wappingers Falls.
The incident occurred during the early morning hours near the intersection of East Main Street and Market Street. Authorities have not released details about what led to the encounter, and the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.
According to officials, members of the Village of Wappingers Falls Police Department, the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, and New York State Police responded to the scene. During the incident, law enforcement personnel fired their weapons, resulting in the teenager’s death.
The 17-year-old was pronounced dead following the encounter. His identity has not been released pending notification of his family.
Village of Wappingers Falls Police Commissioner Dave Fisher expressed condolences to those affected by the incident.
“On behalf of the members of the Village of Wappingers Falls Police Department, I extend my sincere condolences to the family and friends of this young man,” Fisher said. “Our thoughts are also with the responding officers, their families, and all those whose lives have been affected by this tragic incident.”
Officials said there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Under New York State law, the Office of Special Investigation within the New York State Attorney General’s Office has assumed responsibility for investigating the fatal police-involved shooting. The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office is assisting with the investigation.
Because the investigation remains active, authorities have not released additional information regarding what led officers to discharge their firearms.
