Colin Kaepernick Funds Independent Autopsy for Nolan Xavier Wells

MISSISSIPPI — Former NFL quarterback and civil rights activist Colin Kaepernick is helping the family of Nolan Xavier Wells by funding an independent autopsy as they continue searching for answers surrounding the 18-year-old’s death.

The announcement was made by civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who represents Wells’ family, during a press conference and later discussed on ABC’s Good Morning America.

According to Crump, the family requested a second autopsy outside of Mississippi to provide an independent medical review as questions surrounding Nolan’s death continue.

“We flew his body up from Mississippi to Washington, D.C., because they wanted an autopsy done by a person with no interaction with the Mississippi law enforcement because there’s an issue of trust here that is really important,” Crump said.

Why the Family Requested an Independent Autopsy

Nolan Xavier Wells disappeared during a July 4 boating trip near Horn Island, Mississippi. His body was recovered several days later.

Authorities have said they suspect Wells drowned and have stated that, at this time, they have found no evidence of foul play. However, the investigation remains active, and final autopsy results have not yet been released.

The Wells family says unanswered questions surrounding the investigation led them to seek an independent examination.

An independent autopsy allows another forensic pathologist to examine the body separately from the official medical examiner. While it does not replace the state’s investigation, it can provide additional medical findings that may help clarify the circumstances surrounding a death.

Kaepernick Steps In

Kaepernick’s decision to cover the cost of the independent autopsy adds another high-profile voice supporting the Wells family’s search for answers.

The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback has long been known for his activism and support of civil rights causes. His contribution ensures the family can obtain an independent medical opinion while the official investigation continues.

Investigation Remains Active

Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter has said investigators welcome the additional examination and remain committed to conducting a complete investigation.

Authorities continue reviewing witness statements, digital evidence, photos, videos, and tips submitted by the public.

The Wells family says they will continue pursuing every available avenue as they seek answers about Nolan’s death.
