Kirk Franklin Reflects on Childhood Poverty in Funny Marco Interview
FORT WORTH, Texas — Gospel music legend Kirk Franklin reflected on the poverty and instability that shaped his childhood during an appearance on Funny Marco’s Open Thoughts podcast.
Franklin said he was adopted at age 4 by Gertrude, a 64-year-old woman with a fourth-grade education. He recalled growing up without his biological parents in the home and said the family relied on government assistance while living in difficult conditions, including a house without a bathroom door.
The conversation shifted into Funny Marco’s signature deadpan humor when the host questioned why Gertrude would adopt Franklin while already facing financial hardship. The unexpected exchange brought a light moment to Franklin’s otherwise painful recollections.
Despite their circumstances, Gertrude recognized and supported Franklin’s musical ability. She collected and recycled newspapers and aluminum cans to help pay for his piano lessons, providing an early foundation for the career that would make him one of gospel music’s most influential figures.
Franklin’s story traces a journey from childhood poverty and abandonment to decades of international success, while highlighting the sacrifices made by the woman who nurtured his talent.
