PATTI LABELLE HONORED WITH CULTURE ICON AWARD DURING STAR-STUDDED ESSENCE FESTIVAL BRUNCH

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana — Music legend Patti LaBelle was honored with the Culture Icon Award during the sixth annual Black Excellence Brunch held over the weekend as part of the 2026 ESSENCE Festival of Culture.
Hosted by Trell Thomas in partnership with NYX Professional Makeup, the event brought together more than 250 leaders and changemakers from entertainment, politics, business, media, beauty, and advocacy to celebrate Black excellence and cultural achievement.
LaBelle, 82, was recognized for her decades-long impact on music, entrepreneurship, and Black culture. During the ceremony, she thanked attendees for supporting her throughout her career and reflected on the importance of maintaining good health, embracing others with kindness, and remaining authentic.
“I have pains like everyone else, but I take care of myself,” LaBelle said while encouraging others to prioritize their health. She also credited her strength to the love she shares with fans, saying she enjoys taking photos with supporters rather than turning them away.
Following the presentation, Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Marsha Ambrosius performed LaBelle’s classic hit “If Only You Knew,” drawing an emotional response from the legendary singer, who stood near the stage throughout the tribute.
U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett also addressed attendees, encouraging the audience to continue standing together and honoring the generations whose sacrifices paved the way for future leaders.
The brunch welcomed a number of notable guests, including MC Lyte, Dawn Richard, Lynae Vanee, Malinda Williams, Raven Goodwin, Diarra Kilpatrick, Lisa Price, and several other influential figures from across the country.
The annual Black Excellence Brunch has become one of the signature events during ESSENCE Festival weekend, celebrating individuals whose contributions continue to shape Black culture, leadership, and community.
