ST. PAUL, Minnesota — Lionel Richie was forced to end the opening night of his latest tour early after becoming ill during a performance at Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul.

The 77-year-old music icon was approximately 55 minutes into the concert when he stopped during a performance of his hit song “Dancing on the Ceiling.” Richie sat down on stage and told the audience he was feeling dizzy, joking, “When you’re feeling dizzy, sit your ass down.”

After taking a seat, Richie performed one more song, “Three Times a Lady,” from the piano before announcing an unexpected intermission.

His five-piece band remained on stage for about 15 minutes as recorded music played. Roughly 40 minutes later, saxophonist Dino Soldo informed the audience that Richie was not well enough to continue the performance.

“Unfortunately, Lionel is not feeling well,” Soldo told concertgoers. “Additional information will be available.”

John Paris, drummer for tourmates Earth, Wind & Fire, later said Richie showed no signs of illness before taking the stage and believed the singer was simply “a little dehydrated.”

The concert was the first stop of Richie’s 26-date “Sing Along All Night Long” tour with Earth, Wind & Fire. His next scheduled performance is set for Friday in Chicago.

Representatives for Richie have not released additional information regarding his condition or whether the St. Paul concert will be rescheduled.
