MTA Honors Jay-Z With Pop-Up Subway Station Celebrating 30 Years of Reasonable Doubt
NEW YORK, New York — Roc Nation is marking the 30th anniversary of Jay-Z’s groundbreaking debut album, Reasonable Doubt, with a series of immersive pop-up experiences across Brooklyn and Manhattan that celebrate the rapper’s legacy, music, and influence on hip-hop culture.
The celebration officially launched on June 25 with activations in Brooklyn’s Dumbo neighborhood and Manhattan’s Lower East Side, giving fans the opportunity to explore exclusive exhibits, limited-edition merchandise, and memorabilia tied to one of hip-hop’s most influential albums.
The Brooklyn experience is being held at Smack Mellon, a former boiler house located at 92 Plymouth Street. The location holds historical significance, as the building appeared in the background of Jay-Z’s iconic “Dead Presidents” music video. The pop-up is open daily through July 5 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Parked outside the venue is Jay-Z’s famed 1993 Lexus GS 300, a vehicle frequently referenced throughout his music and featured in the “Dead Presidents” video, offering fans a nostalgic look back at the early days of his career.
Inside, visitors can browse an extensive collection of exclusive merchandise celebrating both the 30th anniversary of Reasonable Doubt and the 25th anniversary of The Blueprint. Items include commemorative T-shirts, hoodies, long-sleeve shirts, varsity jackets, Mitchell & Ness Yankees jerseys, hats, vinyl records, cassette tapes, and collector’s editions of Jay-Z’s music.
Among the featured collectibles is a complete vinyl box set of Jay-Z’s 13 solo albums, retailing for $1,500, which includes 4:44 on vinyl for the first time. Fans can also purchase copies of Decoded and The Book of HOV coffee table book.
One of the most sought-after items is the black Reasonable Doubt varsity jacket worn by Beyoncé during Roots Picnic, which is priced at $1,000. Limited quantities of the merchandise will also be available during Jay-Z’s upcoming three-night run at Yankee Stadium from July 10 through July 12.
Jay-Z made a surprise appearance at the Brooklyn activation on opening day, greeting fans while taking in the exhibit celebrating the album that launched his career.
The celebration also extends into Manhattan, where Roc Nation partnered with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to transform portions of the Bowery Station along the J and Z subway lines into a Reasonable Doubt-themed experience. The Manhattan activation is open June 25 and June 26 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
In addition to the exhibits, commemorative Jay-Z library cards are available beginning June 25 at the Brooklyn Public Library’s Central Library and Marcy Branch, further honoring the Brooklyn native’s impact on New York City culture.
