CARACAS, Venezuela — Rescue crews are searching through collapsed buildings after a powerful earthquake struck northern Venezuela, causing widespread damage and sending residents rushing into the streets.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, two powerful earthquakes struck within seconds of each other Wednesday evening. The larger quake measured a preliminary magnitude of 7.5 and was centered near the country’s northern coast.

The earthquakes were felt across much of Venezuela and neighboring Colombia. In Caracas, several buildings partially collapsed, including a Bancaribe bank building, while emergency crews worked to rescue people trapped beneath the rubble.

Authorities have not released an official number of deaths or injuries, saying it is too early to determine the full impact of the disaster.

The U.S. Geological Survey issued red alerts indicating that the earthquakes could result in high casualties and extensive damage. Security forces and emergency personnel have been deployed across the country, and officials have shut off gas service to some buildings as a precaution while damaged structures are inspected.

A tsunami advisory that was initially issued following the earthquake has since been canceled.

Rescue operations remain underway as officials continue assessing damage across affected communities.
