Wilson, North Carolina — Authorities have identified 21-year-old Abdul Karim Mustafa as the suspect in Monday’s shooting outside the Wilson County Courthouse, where police say a 19-year-old woman was shot multiple times before two law enforcement officers were wounded during a subsequent exchange of gunfire.

According to investigators, the woman was shot outside the courthouse shortly before 10:40 a.m. She remains in critical condition and is fighting for her life. As officers responded, authorities say Mustafa fled the scene and exchanged gunfire with law enforcement, injuring a Wilson police officer and a Wilson County sheriff’s deputy. Officials said both officers are in stable condition and are expected to recover.

Mustafa was taken into custody a short distance from the courthouse. He is currently facing multiple charges, including attempted first-degree murder, and officials have indicated that additional charges are expected as the investigation continues.

Investigators believe the shooting was an isolated retaliatory attack connected to an earlier homicide investigation.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is investigating the officer-involved shooting, while local authorities continue to investigate the attack on the 19-year-old victim.
