Texas Teen Sentenced to 25 Years in Prison for Convenience Store Robbery

HOUSTON, Texas — An 18-year-old Texas man was sentenced to 25 years in prison after being convicted in connection with the robbery of a convenience store, prompting emotional reactions from family members inside the courtroom.
Caden James Fontenette received the sentence from Judge Raquel West, who said she did not believe probation would be an appropriate option based on the circumstances of the case.
“There was a time some years ago that there really wasn’t even a question. State’s attorneys were recommending youthful offenders probation. Let’s give everybody an opportunity,” West said during the sentencing
.
The judge explained that she did not believe Fontenette was likely to succeed if placed on probation.
“You don’t have a good likelihood of being successful if I were to put you on probation. I’m going to sentence you to a term of 25 years,” West said.
