Tupac Shakur’s Father Reacts to Keffe D Guilty Verdict, Still Believes Son’s Murder Was a “Setup”
LAS VEGAS, NV — Tupac Shakur’s biological father, Billy Garland, is speaking out following the conviction of Duane “Keffe D” Davis in the nearly 30-year-old murder case surrounding the legendary rapper’s death.
Garland discussed the verdict during an interview shared by The Art of Dialogue, saying he still believes there is more to his son’s killing than the version of events presented in court and continues to view the murder as a “setup.”
A Las Vegas jury found Davis guilty on August 31 of first-degree murder with a deadly weapon in connection with Shakur’s 1996 killing. Prosecutors did not accuse Davis of firing the fatal shots. Instead, they argued that he orchestrated the retaliatory attack and supplied the weapon used in the shooting.
Shakur was riding in a BMW driven by Death Row Records co-founder Marion “Suge” Knight on September 7, 1996, when gunfire erupted from a vehicle near the Las Vegas Strip. Shakur was critically wounded and died six days later at age 25. Knight was wounded but survived.
Garland’s comments reflect his personal belief about the circumstances surrounding his son’s death and do not alter the jury’s verdict. He has questioned the official narrative surrounding the killing in previous interviews as well.
Garland also addressed Knight’s decision not to cooperate with prosecutors during Davis’ trial. Before the trial began, Knight publicly said he did not want to testify and wanted to be left out of the case.
Davis, 63, has maintained his innocence and indicated that he intends to appeal his conviction. His sentencing is scheduled for October 13, when he faces the possibility of life in prison.
