CARACAS, Venezuela — Venezuela’s acting President Delcy Rodríguez has declared a state of emergency following a devastating earthquake that caused widespread destruction across parts of the country.

The declaration comes as emergency crews continue searching collapsed buildings and rescuing survivors in affected areas after the powerful earthquake struck Wednesday.

Authorities are still assessing the full extent of the damage, and officials have not released a final number of deaths or injuries. Multiple buildings collapsed in Caracas and other communities, prompting emergency personnel to deploy across the country.

Government officials have also shut off gas service to some buildings as a precaution while engineers inspect damaged structures.

The U.S. Geological Survey issued red alerts following the earthquake, warning of the potential for significant casualties and extensive damage. A tsunami advisory that was initially issued after the quake has since been canceled.

Rescue operations remain ongoing as emergency officials continue responding to the disaster.
