YG REFLECTS ON CONTROVERSY SURROUNDING ‘FDT’ NEARLY A DECADE AFTER ITS RELEASE

LOS ANGELES, California — Rapper YG says he has no plans to release a follow-up to his 2016 protest anthem “FDT,” explaining that the song continues to generate attention and controversy nearly a decade after its release.
During a recent appearance on Big Boy’s Neighborhood, the Compton rapper said fans regularly ask whether he intends to record a second installment of the politically charged track. YG said he appreciates the interest but is focused on other aspects of his career and has no desire to revisit the song.
Reflecting on the record’s lasting impact, YG claimed it brought increased attention from federal authorities and created challenges for some of his live performances. He said there have been occasions where event organizers wanted to book him but requested that he not perform “FDT,” citing concerns over the song’s content.
YG also recalled a performance at San Diego State University around 2017, where he said his team informed him that his performance contract prohibited him from performing the song. According to YG, he was warned that performing “FDT”could jeopardize a $60,000 payment for the show. Despite that warning, he said he chose to perform the record anyway and was ultimately paid.
The rapper said those experiences are among the reasons he has decided not to create a sequel to “FDT.” While acknowledging that many of the political issues addressed in the song remain relevant today, including immigration enforcement and ICE raids, YG said he would rather move forward creatively than revisit the same message.
Originally released in 2016, “FDT” became one of YG’s most recognizable songs and sparked national attention for its outspoken political message. Years later, YG says the record remains one of the most frequently discussed songs in his catalog, but he believes its place in hip-hop history is already established and does not feel compelled to continue the series.
